Karl McCartney turns down request for support

Before his comments on the campaign in the Lincolnshire Echo, Karl McCartney, Lincoln’s local MP, was contacted about the campaign and asked if he would support our aims. Below is his response:

Karl McCartney Letter Political Education

We are, of course, very disappointed that he currently will not back us as the support of our local MP would be helpful in triggering a debate in the House of Commons on the issue, which is one of our aims.

It would appear that he is under the impression that Citizenship lessons sufficiently cover political education, when we know that this is simply not the case as it does not explain in any detail how legislation is made, the roles of certain representative bodies or encourage any deeper interest in or understanding of the political system.

However, as he makes no attempt to argue that political education should not be taught this indicates that he is not actually opposed to the idea in itself so hopefully we might be able to change his mind. The campaign for Political Education is supported by a number of MPs from all parties, including a few of his own colleagues in the Conservative Party.

Details of how to get in contact with Karl McCartney can be found under the “Get Involved” page. Please write to or email him explaining why the campaign is important and why he should support it.
